Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company F, 1st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on April 20, 1861 (Pennsylvania Adjutant General records for this regiment lists is name as "Edward Boring"). He served until his muster out on July 24, 1861.

He rejoined the Union Army on September 17, 1861, when he was mustered in as a 1st Sergeant in Company E, 79th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on June 19, 1864, he served through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out on July 12, 1865.

On February 4, 1907 he filed for a United States Army Veterans Pension (Application #1356331, Certificate #1131108).

He was a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) and of the Grand Army of the Republic George G. Meade Post #1.
