She had been a patient in Memorial Hospital in Danville, VA for two weeks and had returned home a few hours before her death. Her death was as a shock to her family and friends.
She was born in the Swansonville Community of Pittsylvania County to Florence Wells Mitchell and the late William Henry Mitchell. She was well known in the Mount Cross Community, where she had spent many years of her life and was a devoted member of Sharon Baptist Church.
Her husband William Witcher Childress preceded her to the grave five years ago.
Besides her mother Florence Wells Mitchell, she leaves one son George Emerson Mitchell of the US Navy and four daughters Mrs. Harold Mitchell Gunnell of Hampton, VA, Mrs. Mortimer Mitchell Moore, Jr of New River, NC, Elsie Childress and Rebecca Childress, both on Mount Cross.
She is also survived by two sisters Mrs. Rosa Collins of Swansonville and Mrs. Ruby Kirkman of Mount Greensboro, NC, three brothers Henry C Mitchell, Major Mitchell and Elton Mitchell of Danville, fourteen step grandchildren and two grand children.
Funeral services were held at her residence in Mount Cross with the Reverend G C Lynch officiating.
Burial was in the Childress Family Cemetery at the residence.
Pallbearers were Henry Mitchell, Major Mitchell, Elton Mitchell, J W Childress, P B Childress and H H Childress.
Honorary pallbearers were H P Green, B V Booth, L C Horne, Russell Burch, I H Watson, Bernard Mills, S A Slaughter and Guy Coleman.
