Charles S. Babbit was born in 1852 at Rushford, N. Y., and lived there until he was twenty-four years old. His first job was driving the stage and carrying mail during 1876 from Rushford to Arcade. In 1877 he went to Bradford, Pa., and worked at drilling oil wells until 1881. When the oil excitement was transferred to the Bolivar field he went there and operated at Richburg for five years, followed by three years in the Findley, O., field. He then spent eight years on a farm in Forestville, N. Y.

Mr Babbitt came to Franklinville in 1897 and bought the R. C. Button livery, which he ran for a year, then bought the A. B. Morgan farm in Farmersville where he staid for a season, then in a livery in Springville for a year, and in 1900 returned to Franklinville and bought the Star Hotel. In 1901 he sold this property to Mrs. Mary Feidler, and bought the Conrad farm at Five Mile, which two years later he traded with E. M. Adams for the Globe Hotel property, which later he sold to S. D. Kingsley, the present proprietor.

In 1911 in partnership with Oscar Cooley, Mr. Babbitt bought the Leslie McGeorge feed mill below the depot, and the following year sold out to his partner. In March 1913 he bought of Geo. N. James the village farm he now runs at the upper end of Maple Avenue. He was married in 1882 to Miss Mary Marion of Clarksville. He is a member of the local K. O. T. M.
