Anna Magdalena Macan Hardesty

Kansas City, Kan.

Longtime Emporia resident Anna Magdalena Macan Hardesty, 91, of Kansas City, Kan., died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, in Kansas City.

Mrs. Hardesty owned and operated a beauty salon in her Emporia home at 501 East St. for 62 years, from 1940 until 2002, until she fell and broke her hip. She moved to Kansas City, Kan., in 2002 to live with her daughter, Margret Hathaway.

The daughter of Izadore and Mary Macan, she was born Nov. 29, 1913, in western Wyandotte County and grew up on the family farm. She graduated from Southwest High School in 1933. She had cosmetology training and then worked for Margaret Comfort in a salon in Argentine.

She married Mrs. Comfort's brother, James Hardesty, in 1936 and they moved to Emporia. He died in 1970.

Mrs. Hardesty is also survived by a son James W. Hardesty Jr. of Topeka; a sister Marie Macan of Bonner Springs; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her "surrogate family" in Emporia who looked after her daily, especially Harry and Maybelle Turner.

The burial service will be at 1 P.M. Tuesday in Maplewood Cemetery at Emporia.
