Elmer Trampel, son of August and Anna (Arends) Trampel was born February 2, 1922 near Klemme, Iowa. Elmer graduated from the Klemme High School in 1938 and attended North Iowa Teachers College, now known as UNI in Cedar Falls. He was drafted in the United States Army in 1943 and served in the combat infantry in the European Theatre. After the war, he finished his service as a military police officer at Galesburg, Illinois and traveled with the military volleyball team, touring in Europe before being honorably discharged in 1946.

Elmer met Irene Lansing at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake while he was home on leave and was united in marriage on February 10, 1948 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. To this union, two children were born: Michael and Mary Kay. The family farmed in the Dows and Alexander area for many years, developing a pure bred Holstein dairy heard. They then moved in to Mason City in 1998.

Elmer and Irene loved to dance and traveled to many ballrooms throughout the Midwest. Elmer and Irene shared their life together for over 64 years. He enjoyed sports in general, especially playing town team softball and cheering on the Chicago Cubs and the Minnesota Twins. He was an active volunteer as a Mercy Ambassador during his retirement years.

He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City.

Elmer is survived by his loving wife, Irene; children, Michael (Pat) Trampel and Mary Kay (David) Allen; grandchildren, Crystal Trampel, Rachel Trampel, Kaitlyn Trampel, Nathan (Jessica) Allen and Holly Allen; sisters-in-law, Sharon (Jerry) O'Neil and Geraldine Lansing along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
