Mary Ellen Santolin Cardella was the daughter of Anthony Santolin and Anna Pieropan, both originally from Italy. She married Frank Joseph Cardella in Middleton, New York on October 16, 1935. They lived for a decade in Winsted, Connecticut before moving to Pittsfield, Massachusetts in 1945. They had three daughters, Elizabeth Ann Cardella, Patricia Louise Cardella, and Josephine Natalie Cardella.

Mary Cardella worked in various nursing homes and from 1968-1977 was the executive housekeeper at Blantyre Castle in Lenox, Massachusetts. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, embroidery, gardening and reading, as well as spending time with her twelve grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren. She was proud of her colorful rose garden. Her special cherry nut cake, lemon meringue pie, macaroni and cheese, and deviled eggs were family favorites. She was always generous with her beautifully embroidered pillowcases and tablecloths.
