MSG William W. Betchley, US Army (Ret), passed away November 26, 2012, in San Antonio, Texas. He was born January 12, 1938, in Yonkers, New York to William and Sophie Betchley. Bill started showing dogs when he was 12 years old. When Bill met Pat, he was a laboratory supervisor and Pat was a nurse. One day while they were in the cafeteria, Pat said something about having a pet raccoon and Bill knew then and there that she was the girl for him. Bill was already breeding and showing Silky Terriers and Pat fell right in to the picture. Gradually, they moved from showing their own dogs to showing dogs for other people that eventually became clients and in the first year, they did 150 shows. In the spring of 1984 or 1985, while doing the New England Circuit, they met a lady named Helen Mancuso. It was the dog she had that first caught Pat's eye, a big black, beautiful Newfoundland named "Sonny". Pat convinced Helen to let them take the dog and the following year, when "Sonny" came home, he was an International, American, Canadian and Mexican Champion. During the year, they developed a love for the Newfoundland Breed, so when Bill and Pat brought "Sonny" home to Helen, she surprised them with a puppy they could call their own. The puppy was called "Essex" and in time would become Champion Boradaile's HMS Essex. Some problems that Bill acquired during military service were aggravated by age and the vigorous schedule they were keeping and were forced to stop showing dogs. He recovered and was able to resume his love of the Newfoundland breed. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Betchley; daughters, Lee Betchley, Sophie Harbert, Joyce Van House, and Janet Smith; sons, Richard Hopson and Ronald Hopson; sister, Lorraine Brodsky; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank all who assisted in his care and Amedisys Hospice.
