Montesano Pioneer Dies

Frank W Byles, a native Washingtonian and grandson of pioneers who founded the town of Montesano, died Wednesday in a Tacoma hospital. He was 78 years old.

Mr Byles himself was born and lived all his life in Montesano, where his grandparents first farmed the land now occupied by the community. He was the son of Charles Byles, who was nine years old when he accompanied six members of his family, all from Kentucky, as part of the famous immigrant wagon train of 1853, first to make the difficult Naches Pass crossing through the Cascades.

For many years, Mr Byles engaged in the logging and lumbering business. From 1919 to 1937 he was manager of the Clemons Logging Co, a subsidiary and subsequently purchased by the Weyerhaeuser Timber Co. Mr Byles continued as manager of the concern, which became the Clemons branch of the Weyerhaeuser Timber Co, until his retirement in 1945.

Surviving Mr Byles are his wife Ruth M, of the home in Montesano; two sons, Chester of Montesano and Elvin of Aberdeen; a daughter, Mrs Allen (Carol) Petrich of Tacoma, and three sisters, Mrs Martha Rosmond of Oakville, Wash, Mrs Anna Baker of Bainbridge Island and Mrs Naomi Hall of Elma.

Services will be announced by the Whiteside Mortuary in Montesano. The family asks that flowers be omitted.
