The home of one of our old settlers, J. L. Summers, was sadly bereaved, Feb, 20th by the death of his beloved wife. For nearly 55 years, Mrs. Summers had been the life of his home. Nine children were born to them: four have died and five are alive and married, living in their own home. They have 20 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Half of their married life spent in Saline Co, Neb. They have a good farm. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal Church. The sermon was preached by Rev. F. M. Esterbrook. Two daughters were present to comfort their father. One son in Kansas City reached home after the funeral. Two sons are living in Furnace Co, and coudn't be present. Burial at DeWitt Cemetery.

Mrs. John L. Summers died at her home near Dewitt, February 20th, 1896, at the advanced age of 72. She has been on the decline for about two years but the fatal illness began about two weeks before her death. She leaves a husband, five children, twenty grandchildren and two great grandchildren to mourn. She also has an aged sister, of eighty one years of age, Mrs. Ash, living near here. She was born Olden Co, Kentucky, from there with her parents she moved to Clark Co., Ind. She was married to her now bereaved husband and lived for a number of years in the above place. In 1868 they moved to Saline Co, Nebr. For about 55 years Mr. and Mrs. Summers have lived happily together, they were always ready to help and comfort their more unfortunate neighbors. Four of their children were buried before her death.
The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. F. M. Esterbrook of the M. E. Church Feb. 20th-----A large procession of neighbors and friends followed her remains to the Dewitt cemetery.
