Dr. Clarence H. Woolsey Dies After Active Life As Educator
Dr. Clarence H. Woolsey died suddenly of a heart attack at his home on Prospect Street, Saturday morning, May 26. He and Mrs. Woolsey had celebrated his eighty-first birthday with a trip to New York City only a few weeks ago.
A son of Luther and Rachel Hood Woolsey, Dr. Woolsey was born in Stone Ridge May 9, 1864. He attended the local schools in Stone Ridge and then continued his education, graduating from the State Normal School at Cortland, N.Y., in 1884; Harvard university, A.B., 1890; N.Y. university LLB., 1892; Washington university, St. Louis, Missouri, A.M., 1895; Washington university, St. Louis, Mo., Ph.D., 1897.
After thirteen years of elementary school teaching he became principal of the Poughkeepsie High School in 1901-1905 (having married Ruth Edna Woolsey of New Paltz, Aug. 14, 1901). He was principal at Irvington, N.Y., 1906; Middletown, Conn., 1906-1910; New Britain, Conn., 1910-1913.
In 1913 he assumed principalship of the New Paltz High School, retiring in 1928 after 40 years of teaching. During his years as principal at New Paltz, his high standards, thoroughness, kindliness and understanding were an inspiration to the young people of this community.
During part of this time he filled the office of mayor of the village.
Since his retirement he traveled extensively, and took a keen interest in civic affairs. He was a trustee of the Elting Memorial Library Association, a trustee of the New Paltz Savings Bank, a member of the Consistory of the New Paltz Reformed Church, and a member of the Holland Society, acting as head of the Ulster county branch for a number of years. He was an insatiable reader and took great pride in his garden. He kept up a keen interest in his former pupils and was deeply touched when on his 80th birthday he received a shower of greeting cards and letters from members of the class of 1902 of the Poughkeepsie High School. He always attended the reunions of his class at Harvard.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Lewis Woolsey of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; and a brother, Lester H. Woolsey of Washington, D.C.
Rev. Gerret Wullschleger conducted the funeral services Tuesday afternoon at the V.T. Pine and Son funeral home, with burial in the New Paltz cemetery.
In the closing prayer, the Minister expressed the thought that there were "intimations of immortality" in the fact that a true teacher imparts something of himself to his students-and scattered over this world men and women taught by Dr. Woolsey would perpetuate his memory as they put into practice those things gained in the classroom.
The conviction was also stated that this man whom we remembered walking down the street, stopping at the library, always vigorous in his pursuit of culture would continue to explore the widening horizons of the mind after the transition we call death.
