Ruth Dockery Hughes of Northwest Portland, a longtime OMSI employee who answered the museum's phones for so many years she gained the nickname 'the voice of OMSI,' died of cancer Saturday in her home. She was 73.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in St. Bartholomew Episcopal Church.

She was born Aug. 30, 1919, in Portland, she was a graduate of Jefferson High School and attended Oregon State College, now OSU. Her maiden name was Dockery. She married John Van Gorder in 1939. Following his death during World War II, she married Septimus R. Hughes in 1942. He died in 1949.

Mrs. Hughes began doing volunteer work at OMSI during the mid-1950s and retained her association with the museum through the mid-1980s. One of the museum's directors, in a nod to both her distinctive voice and the fact that she always seemed to be on the phone, finally gave her the moniker 'the voice of OMSI.'

She is survived by her son, Karl D. of Portland, and two grandchildren.

Disposition was by cremation.
