A company for Southern Confederacy which George W. Lee took to Pensacola, Fla., in February, 1861, holds the honor of being the first to tender its services to President Jefferson Davis, at Montgomery. One of the members of this company was Dr. E.L. Connally. AS the company returned from its successful mission they met with ovations all along the route. On the train with them were some ladies, who became so enthused that they procured some material at Grantville, made and presented the company with a handsome flag, the first one ever made in Georgia. The flag showed seven stars in a circle on a blue union and three horizontal bars of red and white.
