Rollie was the son of Thomas and Melanie Kruger Ames. He was a farmer with an eighth grade education and also worked in the oil fields. He was of medium height and build with blue eyes and light brown hair. Rollie married Mattie Brough on 27 February 1899 in Lucas County.
