She was born June 17, 1930, in Clarendon County, to the late Grant Sr. and Louise James Conyers. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she attended New Hope Union Methodist Episcopal Church. After marriage, she joined LaGree African Methodist Episcopal. She retired from the state of New York in 2001 and relocated to Sumter.
Survivors are her husband, Archie Montgomery of the home; five sons, Archie Montgomery Jr., Melvin (Priscella) Montgomery, Darrel Montgomery and Rudy Montgomery, all of Sumter, and Stanley Montgomery of Bronx, N.Y.; nine daughters, Katie J. DuBose, Geraldine Carter, Sandra M. (Grover) Clark, Charlene D. Anderson and Dawn M. Langley, all of Bronx, Nellie L. (Clyde) Young, Kendra A. Montgomery and Kenyada D. Montgomery, all of Sumter, and Rose Robinson of Columbia; a sister, Elma Belser; a brother, David (the Rev. Lou) Conyers; 31 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at LaGree AME Church with the Rev. Jeanette M. Collins, pastor, the Rev. Henry Williams, the Rev. Dr. Norvel Goff Sr., the Rev. Lemuel Washington, the Rev. Lou Conyers and the Rev. Ramses Conyers. Burial will follow in Cain Cemetery.
Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
