Francis Hull was born in the West Parish of Granville, now Tolland, Massachusetts on 2 July 1804. He died 17 September 1878 on his farm in Clifford Township, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, where he had lived for 43 years.

Francis was perhaps the tenth of twelve children born to Robert Hull (1765-1851) and Sarah Slocum (1766-1853). In 1816, when Francis was 12 years old, his father moved the family to Perry, New York in a section now known as Castile, Wyoming, New York. His oldest brothers remained in the area near Tolland. Before long his siblings began to scatter across the country. Francis may have worked in Tolland where his grandparents, Uncle John and some of his brothers lived. Sometime in the mid to late 1820s Francis moved to Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

Francis initially lived in Blakely Township, now in Lackawanna County. His cousins from Tolland, Phebe Hull Barber and William Henry Hull, both moved to Blakely in the 1820s. In 1830 neither Francis nor his older cousin William Henry Hull were married. They are probably listed in the household of their brother-in-law, Calvin Barber, in Blakely. On 23 October 1832, when Francis Hull purchased a farm in Greenfield Township, he was identified as "of Blakely" (Luzerne County Deeds 29:283).

Francis married Frances Mariah "Fanny" Stevens about 1831. Fanny was born in Vermont but had moved to Pennsylvania with her parents as a young child. Francis and Fanny's first child, Harriet, was born 30 January 1832. Francis and Fanny, already living in Clifford, sold their Greenfield farm to Fanny's father, Joel Stevens, for $500 on 22 August 1835 (Luzerne County Deeds 53:514). The transfer was essentially a land trade. On the same day Joel Stevens sold a 147-acre farm in Clifford to Francis Hull and his brother-in-law, Elias Stevens for $1,000 (Susquehanna County Deeds 9:461).

Frances and Fanny had ten children including an infant who died at birth, Harriet who died at age 5, and Charles who died at age 19. Seven lived into their seventies and eighties. Fanny died 23 April 1849 when her youngest child was only a year and a half. Francis Hull never remarried, raising his children on his Clifford farm.

The Civil War impacted the family. Sons George, Frank, Henry and Emory all saw action in Pennsylvania units. Daughters Mary and Jennie married husbands who served in New York and Illinois regiments. Some suffered injuries that lasted their lifetimes.

Of the seven adult children, only the oldest, George, remained in the Clifford area. Mary, Jennie and Emory moved to Aurora, Illinois. Henry was a Harvard-educated lawyer and stock rancher in Nebraska. Frank homesteaded in Nebraska. John, after living in Nebraska for a few years, eventually settled in Brooklyn and Hempstead, New York, where he owned a weather strip manufacturing company.

Francis Hull was baptized in the Methodist Episcopal church and was a member of Sunday school classes attached to the Clifford Methodist Church. Sons John (a Methodist) and Emory (married a Baptist minister's daughter) were both active in their congregations.
