WINSTON SALEM — Ms. Peggy Clendenin Petree, 85, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, December 17, 2011.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Visitation will follow the service at 1425 Willow Woods Way in Winston-Salem. A private family burial will take place at Green Hill Cemetery in Greensboro.

A lifetime resident of the Piedmont, Peggy was born in Greensboro to the late Kemp Cook Clendenin, Sr. and Willie Jean Sloan Clendenin. At the age of 15, Peggy was appointed the first Miss Greensboro in 1940. This led to her participation in the National Tobacco Festival in South Boston, Virginia where notable actors and actresses, such as, Martha Scott were in attendance along with Guy Lombardo and his orchestra. Peggy was an artist at heart and by trade for the majority of her life, whether as an elementary student or a professional portrait artist. She attended Sullins Girl School, now Sullins College in Bristol, TN and graduated from there at an early age to advance to the Parsons School of Design in New York City where she earned a degree in Art and Interior Design. Upon returning to North Carolina, Peggy entered the field of real estate and in her career she won the Clendenin Cup and was Realtor of the Year both in Greensboro. In 2000 she moved to Winston-Salem from Greensboro to be close to her daughter. Peggy was a former member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro but was an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem at the time of her death.

She is survived by three children; two sons, Oscar N. Petree III (Pete) of Winter Haven, FL; Patrick Clendenin Petree of Myrtle Beach, SC; and a daughter, Peggy Petree Myers of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Michael Caroll Petree, Margaret Louise Petree, Travis Nathaniel Petree, Whitney Erin Petree, Logan James Petree, Cameron Dowd Myers and Evan Clendenin Myers; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Jean Clendenin Brown and one brother, Kemp C. Clendenin, Jr.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Association, 2211 W. Meadowview Road, Suite 30, Greensboro, NC 27407 or to the Alzheimer's Association (Western Carolina Chapter), 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.
