Obituary below published on 14 December 1899 in the Prattsburgh News.

"Mr. Samuel J. Fisher, oldest son of James and Rachel Fisher, was born near Geneva, Ontario county, NY, January 20th, 1817, and died of heart failure at the home of his son, Purlee M. Fisher, Tuesday, Nov. 28, 1899. On March 19th, 1843 Samuel married Betsy A. Pierson. Together they traveled over life's uneven pathway more than half a century, she having died, January 28th, 1896.

Mr. Fisher was a farmer by occupation, and by great courage and perseverance, converted the forest on his farm into productive fields. Of his characteristics, it may be said he was a great reader and looked upon all subjects presented to his mind in a clear and logical manner. He also valued a man's worth not by his wealth but by his honesty and integrity.

He leaves three sons, (Sylvester C., Sheldon Fayette and Purlee M.) one sister and one brother to mourn him. Samuel also had one daughter, Emily Laura. The funeral services are at the Naples and Italy church, Dec. 1 1899, with Rev. Whalen officiating."

In an 1855 census, Samuel and his wife are recorded as living at South Bristol with their children Sylvester, Emily and Sheldon. Also recorded living with them was a 14 year old girl named Cornelia J. Horton (memorial #151659908), who was referred to as adopted. (She never appears on another census with this family, and we are not sure what connection she has to the Fishers. )

In 1889 Samuel purchased the large Bailey farm at Springwater, NY, for $6000. He moved there and managed the farm with his youngest son, Purlee.

"Samuel J. Fisher has been appointed administrator upon the $200 estate of Rachel Fisher of Howard." (Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, 18 September 1896)

S. J. Fisher has been spending the winter with members of his family at Perry, Springwater and
Rochester. He is now with Purlee Fisher for the summer.
(Prattsburgh News, 17 June 1897)

"In Surrogate's court since our last report: Silvester C. Fisher is administrator of the $2,600 estate of Samuel J. Fisher of Wayland." (Steuben Advocate, 21 Feb 1899)

"S. J. Fisher moved from his farm north of this village [Cohocton] to Wayland last week. Two of his sons will take his place on the farm." (Cohocton Times, 19 April 1899)
