Thomas was the son of Thomas J. and Anna (Gates) Baker. He was in the auctioneer business with his father Thomas J. in Boston and also worked as a speculator. He died of chronic nephritis.

His death certificate indicated he was married; however, he had appealed to the Supreme Judicial Court of the Commonwealth of MA within and for the County of Suffolk in December 1874 for a divorce or an annulment from Josephine Gaige. They were married on 12 August 1866 at Adams, MA.
Thomas claimed that she was formerly the wife of Preserved Gaige of New York City and that he was still living. It was further disclosed that Preserved Gaige had been divorced from Josephine due to adultery and that it was not lawful for her to remarry. Josephine was ordered to appear before the Justices of the Court in April 1875. It is unknown if she complied.

Thomas Freeman Baker is buried with the Norcross Family on the North Plain in an unmarked grave (per Roger Currier who has been investigating Baker/Norcross burials at Pine Grove Cemetery).
