Hart James Nelsen, the son of
Hart F. and Minnie Nelsen, was
born on July 13, 1921 at Newell,
Iowa. He spent his childhood in
Newell and graduated from the
Newell Consolidated School in 1940.
After graduation, he spent the early
years of World War II working at
the shipyards in San Pedro,
California.
Hart was an avid golfer,
following in his father's footsteps,
and took a real interest in the
Newell Golf Course. In the early
years he volunteered his services,
along with others, to collect green
fees and help to maintain the
course. Later, in the 1950's, he was
hired by the community as
manager. Many hours were spent
managing the activities and events,
running a concession, and offering
professional advice in the form of
lessons and equipment. One of his
great joys was the addition of grass
greens to the course. The Newell
Golf Course was Hart's great
interest m life.
During his lifetime Hart suffered
several serious health problems. He
passed away in the Long Beach
Community Hospital in California.
His health began failing rapidly
after a gradual loss of his eyesight
in February. He was confined to the
hospital from May 2, 1976 until his
death on July 11, two days before
his 55th birthday. Several close
friends kept a vigil at his bedside
during his hospitalization
