The son of John and Charlotte (Robson) Zimmer, Don was born in Nemaha, Iowa, on March 25, 1921. He attended grade school and high school in Nemaha. After high school Don was inducted into the United States Army serving from July 1942 through November 1945.

On August 18, 1947, Don was united in marriage to Olive Mae Hunter in Sioux City, Iowa. Olive passed away December 29, 1997.

After World War II he worked at the Wigwam Bakery in Sac City and then the Iowa Department of Transportation for 26 years. He retired in 1983. Don enjoyed golfing and fishing, especially at Twin Lakes Landing in Minnesota, which he helped run from 1984-1994. He enjoyed the outdoors and worked as a volunteer for the Sac County Conservation. Don was one of the original members of the Sac City Museum and established "Olive's Garden" on the side of the one room school house. He was a member of the Jehovah's Witness congregation at Lake City, Iowa. He spent many years with his faithful dog, Bud.

Survivors include his daughter Venita Hampton and husband Michael of Davenport, Iowa; son Stanley Zimmer and wife Carol of Sac City; three grandchildren: Lorrie (Justin) Peeters, Darcy Hampton and Jennifer Hampton all of Davenport; and two great-granddaughters: Isabel and Hannah Peeters. Other survivors include his brother Dale Zimmer and wife Linda of Henderson, North Carolina; three sisters-in-law: Arlene Zimmer and Luella Zimmer both of Sac City and Pat Zimmer of Springfield, Missouri; and many extended family members.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife Olive; and three brothers: his twin Raymond, Luverne, and Leland Zimmer.
