Stephanie "Stella" Thomas, 94, of West Hartford passed away peacefully Sunday (June 24, 2012) at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford.

Born in New York on March 17, 1918, the daughter of two Russian immigrants Nikifor and Stephanida Kulbitsky. A devoted daughter, sister, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, aunt and friend. Stephanie is survived by her son Art Thomas Jr. and daughter-in-law Fran D'Antonio, her daughter Nina Balkum and son-in-law Michael Balkum, granddaughter Kaylie Thomas and two great grandchildren Ryan and Evan.

Stephanie was predeceased by three loving sisters: Helen, Nina and Olga and her devoted husband of 64 years, Arthur Thomas Sr. While a young woman in New York, Stephanie worked on Wall Street at the New Era Letter Co, where she was a supervisor of the typing department.

After marrying on June 17, 1944, Stephanie relocated to Connecticut to start a family. Sixty years of her life was spent in the home that Art built for them in West Hartford in 1951.

Stephanie, also known as "Stella" to her friends, was an extremely artistic and creative woman who made the most beautiful ceramic pieces and lace dolls. She loved her craft and would attend all local fairs to sell her works of art. For many years she was employed at the Elmwood Ceramic Studio where she taught classes and made many lifelong friends. Stella also loved Bingo and would attend as many games as she possibly could, also making trips to the High-stakes games at the casinos. She never won big money, but the fun and social activity was more important to her.

Stella's greatest loves were her family, her pets and life itself. "Stella" had a sense of humor like no other, right up to her final moments she was being herself with the doctors and staff asking them "Are you sure you know what you're doing?".

Stephanie's family would like to express their appreciation to all the caring staff at St. Francis Hospital and Masonicare Hospice who made her stay there as comfortable as possible and for their quick responsiveness to all the family's requests. Additionally, the family would like to say thank you to Drs Mathew F. Colliton and Russell A. Ciafone for their many years of attentive care to help Stephanie reach the age of 94. The family must also give a special thank you to Lucy Vanderpuije, Stephanie's live-in caregiver who cared for her like only a daughter could.

Calling hours will be Wednesday, June 27 from 5-7 p.m. at Sheehan-Hilborn-Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Ave, West Hartford. Funeral service will be Thursday, 10 a.m. at the funeral home followed by graveside services at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Online condolences may be made at www.sheehanhilbornbreen.com.
