Johann Heinrich "Joseph" Bruns was born in Lage, Rieste, Osnabruck, Germany to Johann Heinrich Brune and Gertrude Creutzmann. He married Maria Antonetta Schnuck on 4/13/1833 in Lage, Rieste and emigrated to the Minster area about 1833. In 1835, he purchased land between Dirksen and Fortman Roads west of what became Bruns Road. He was the first settler on the land. They had five children: Johann Heinrich Friederich, Herman Henry, John Bernard, Angelina Elisabeth, and John, all born in Ohio.
