Joe Emmett Barber, age 90, of Hollywood passed away Sunday, November 18, 2012 in Jasper.
Visitation will be held on Friday, November 23, 2012 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Rudder Funeral Home Chapel in Scottsboro. Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Bro. Roy Venable officiating. Interment will follow in Pinehaven Memorial Garden.
Mr. Barber was a rural letter carrier for 30 years and served one term on the County Board of Education and also served three terms as County Commissioner. Some of Mr. Barber's favorite memories about this time include; The one cent sales tax put on county wide for education, helping Rosalie School get a lunchroom, junior high gyms built at Flat Rock, Bryant and Dutton Schools, and the purchase of 42 new school buses.
Mr. Barber will be remembered as a devoted, lifelong member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church, his loyalty to friends and neighbors, and commitment to his community, often saying, "Martintown is the best place in the world to live." Mr. Barber was not a prideful man but took pride in work, family, and community and took great pleasure in doing for others. An uncle to some, a brother to five sisters, a son, a husband, a father to two children, a grandfather to three children, and a great grandfather to three children, but a friend to everyone he knew.
Joe Barber is survived by son, George (Patsy) Barber of Jasper; daughter, Susan (Michael) Brown of Arab; sister, Veda Kate Harris of Southside; grandchildren, Jody (Mary Beth) Barber, Andy Barber and Mechayla Barber Brown; great grandchildren, Grayson, Alex, and Lilly Margaret Barber; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
