STERLING - Richard "Dick" Mead, 83, died Nov. 26, 2012, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born May 23, 1929, in Sterling, son of Rollin and Essie Smith Mead.
A Wichita resident since 2009, formerly of Sterling, he graduated from Sterling High School in 1947, was a retired President and Superintendent for Sterling Drilling Company and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean War. Memberships included: United Methodist Church, Rotary Club and was Past President of American Legion, all of Sterling.
He married Margaret "Beth" Terrill Oct. 30, 1955, in Sterling, Colo. She died March 31, 2012. Survivors include: three sons, Tom and Gayla Mead of Wichita, Randy and Sherrie Mead of Dubois, Idaho, and Chuck and Elizabeth Mead of Peabody; a daughter, Dixie Mead of Billings, Mont.; a sister, Betty Taylor; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Roy and Harry Mead.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at the Sterling United Methodist Church, with Reverend Marvin Ewertt officiating. Burial will be in the Sterling Community Cemetery, with military honors by the U.S. Navy. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. with family present Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at Birzer Funeral Home, Sterling. Memorials to the Dick Mead Memorial Fund, in care of the funeral home.
