Thank You for remembering my Grandfather Jonathan. Your kindness is very appreciated. God bless.

༺ Jonathan Washington Heare was the son of James and Abigail Pownel Heare, born October 18, 1833, in Virginia; died September 25, 1901 in South Charleston, Ohio. Note: Jonathan was the grandson of Adam Heare, American Revolution Veteran, who was born November 12, 1760 in County Armagh, Ireland; died April 8, 1816 in Three Churches, West Virginia. Adam married Margaret Todd in the year 1790 and they had Margaret Todd Heare who was born January 20, 1771 in New Jersey, and died July 17, 1844 in Three Churches, West Virginia.

Jonathan Washington Heare married Mary Catherine Poling, born August 28, 1837. They were married on January 26, 1854 by Rev. William B. Poling, brother of Mary Catherine. In 1880 he was listed as living in the Mad River area known as Selma, Clark County, Ohio. He was a farmer laborer.

Known children of Jonathan and Mary Catherine Poling Heare:

1) Florence Ann Heare, born January 8, 1855 in Romney, Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia), USA; died on January 8, 1855 in Romney, Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia), USA. Florence died very soon after birth.

2) Jemima Christina "Minnie" Heare, born July 12, 1856 in Romney, Hampshire County, Virginia (WV), USA; died on January 14, 1923 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio, USA. Married John Albert Wright in 1878 in Clark County, Ohio, USA. "Minnie" was Jemima's nickname. She was very tiny so "Minnie" became her nickname. The children always called her Aunt Jemima, meaning blessed of God. She was named Jemima after a very dear friend of her mother. (Aunt Jemima was also known to have gone by Jamina, but her given name was Jamima.)
3) James "Jimmy" William Couleh Heare, born October 2, 1858 in Romney, Hampshire County, West Virginia (WV), USA; died August 19, 1947 in Berne, Adams County, Indiana, USA. Married Mary Emma Romine December 16, 1884 in Champaign County, Ohio, USA. (Uncle Jimmy)
4) Mary Catherine Abigail Hear, born July 21, 1860 in Romney, Hampshire County, West Virginia, USA; died September 15, 1912 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio, USA. Married Samuel Edward Parker January 27, 1890 in Clark County, Ohio, USA. (Aunt Mary)
5) Melinda Jane May "Linda" Heare, born November 1, 1862 in Romney, Hampshire County, Virginia (WV), USA; died February 11, 1943 in West Liberty, Perry Twp, Logan County, Ohio, USA. Married William Buffenbarger in 1882. William was the son of Salmon M. and Malinda Powell Buffenbarger. Note: After Salmon passed away Malinda married Giles K. Herrick. (Aunt Lindy)
6) Cora Susanna Rebbeccac Heare, born June 15, 1865 at Mad River (Selma), Clark County, Ohio, USA; died May 23, 1955 in Springfield Clark County Ohio USA. Married William Hon Powell 17 Jun 1883 in Clark County, Ohio, USA.
7) Daniel Newton Augusten Heare, born June 10, 1868 in South Charleston, Clark County, Ohio, USA; died March 26, 1951 in Midland, Midland County, Michigan, USA. Married Mary Elizabeth Cook December 24, 1893 in Adams County, Indiana, USA. Note: Mary was not adopted by Jonathan and Mary Poling Heare as one Heare relative stated. There are no such records confirming this that I have found. It was likely said she was well received into the family as if she were always a part of it, but she was never adopted legally that I have found. She entered the family only by her marriage to Daniel. (Uncle Danny)
8) Charlotte Margaret Alice Heare, born July 28, 1872 in Selma, Clark County, Ohio, USA; died September 26, 1955 in Oakland, Alameda County, California, USA. Married 1st Husband: Royal R. Echard May 23, 1892 in Clark, Ohio, USA; 2nd Husband: John Lane June 30, 1900 in Adams, Indiana, USA. (Aunt Lotty)

GG-Grandpa Jonathan and fought in the Civil War for the Confederate army, as did his brothers, brother-in-laws, and cousins, many signing up to fight. He was caught by the Union army and transported to Cumberland. In order to stay out of prison, a likely death sentence in those times, he signed allegiance to the Union. He had enough of the failing war. From there he was transported to Clark County, Ohio, where he had to remain until the war was over. For signing allegiance to the union his family disowned him and he was cast out. His wife and children were also now considered outcasts. When the war was over he went immediately back home to Three Churches, West Virginia area around Kirby. There he collected his wife and children and moved them to the Springfield area of Clark County, Ohio.

NOTE: It was said by family members that GG-Grandpa Jonathan had life threatening injuries at the time he was captured by the Union Army, this being the reason he signed to the Union. With a wife and children depending on him rather than face certain death in the Union prison he signed over to the Union and was willing to face being outcast by family and community, which he was, so he could be there to provide for his family. It was not an easy choice, though, for him he knew only one choice: His wife and children. It was then a branch of the Heare family came to settle in Clark County, Ohio.

Cause of Death: Neck Cancer.

May our beloved GG-Grandpa Jonathan rest in the peace and love of our Lord always far, far away from wars and hate.
We love you Grandpa!
