He was born in Oklahoma in 1911 and lived most of his life in Rockford. He was a commercial artist by profession with fine art as a hobby. He studied landscape, portrait and figure painting at Rockford College. In 1976, he retired as a commercial artist from J.L. Clark Co., Rockford.

His work has enjoyed great popularity in the art world. He was listed in the ''International Directory of Arts,'' ''Who's Who in American Art,'' and had works reproduced in ''Artists, USA.'' For years his art was featured on ''Twelve Artists of America'' calendars, and two well-known prints, ''Cheek to Cheek'' and ''Jennifer at the Pump'' sold more than a quarter of a million copies. Mr. Bond's work has been exhibited in New York, Virginia, North Carolina and various cities in the Midwest.

In addition to his painting, he had a great love for reading, politics, animals, the outdoors, photography and travel. He traveled to Montana every summer for reference material for his landscapes. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Oriel is lovingly remembered for his care and patience, his quiet manner, capacity for hard work, his highly respected artistic talent and his sense of humor. The family would like to express special thanks to neighbors John and Marilyn Fulton and Harold and Ruth Strote.

He was preceded in death 14 years ago by his wife, Dorothy. He is survived by a special friend, Mabel Carlson, Rockford; a son (and spouse), Bruce (Kate) Bond, Greendale, Wis.; a daughter (and spouse), Judy (Jay) Hanson, Geneseo; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Harshbarger, Roscoe, Ill., and Georgia Smart, Milwaukee, Wis.
