The funeral of another early resident of Phillips County was held last Sunday at the Methodist Church in Logan with Rev. Sherman Archer conducting the services for John Hayes Bowman.

John Hayes Bowman was born January 30, 1876 in New Bedford, Kanhostan County, Ohio. [There is no Ohio county by this name. New Bedford is in Coshocton County.] In 1877 the family moved to Hoopston, Illinois. Five years later, feeling the urge of the west and its opportunities, the family moved once again - arriving in Logan, Kansas on March 4, 1882. Here John grew to manhood, starting school that year in the building known as the Gandy building and finishing all ten grades then offered by our school system. He, with the family, attended Sunday school and church services at the Methodist church.

As John grew up he was associated with his father in the grain and livestock business as well as on the farm which is still owned by the Bowman family.

Later in life he was associated with his brother, George, in the elevator business in Logan.

He was married on May 7, 1902 to Miss Rosie Copeland. To this union was born one son, Keith Bowman. Mrs. Bowman passed away October 15, 1912.

On January 5, 1918 he married Arline A. Pickins of Stockton, Kansas. To this union five children were born - three sons and two daughters. One son, Thomas Hayes Bowman preceded his father in death, having died October 27, 1934 at the age of 27 months.

In 1936 the family moved to Booneville, MO, but after a few months there they moved to Fort Collins, Colorado and in 1945 to Denver, where he passed to rest August 15, 1946.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Arline and sons, Keith of Logan, Jack of Fort Collins, and Lt. Max Bowman, stationed at Omaha, NE; daughters Mrs. Betty Stegner of Saratoga, WY and Miss Alpha Jean of the home; and three grandchildren.

One sister, Mrs. Emma Brown died December 26, 1909 and one brother, George on May 10, 1944.

Living are his sisters Mrs. Ollie Bashford, Pasadena, CA; Mrs. Sue Hood, Greenleaf, KS; a brother-in-law, Thomas Brown, Logan and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Bertha Bowman of Concordia, KS; and many nieces and nephews.
