C. Everett Wilkens, 79 years of age, of DeWitt, NE. passed away at the Bryan/LGH East Hospital in Lincoln Monday night, February 7, 2011. He was born on June 21, 1931 in DeWitt to Carl and Izetta (Jones) Wilkens. Everett was a graduate of DeWitt High School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he majored in Agriculture, and was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity. After graduation he served his country in the United States Air Force from 1952-1954. Everett married Joan Klasek on April 10, 1960. Everett was a lifelong Saline County farmer. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church in DeWitt, member of Corn Growers, Farm Bureau, Plymouth Investment Club, Saline County Wind Association, Grange, Masonic Lodge, Blue Valley Shrine Club, DeWitt American Legion, and DeWitt Senior Diners. Everett received the Outstanding Soil and Water Conservation Cooperator and Irrigation Water Manager from the Lower Big Blue Natural Resources District. He believed in agriculture stewardship and was one of the pioneers in Nebraska ridge-till farming. He enjoyed traveling to Elderhostels.

Survivors include his wife Joan; 2 daughters Beth Malone of DeWitt and Jane Schroeder and husband Dennis of Lincoln; and sister Ellen McCallum of Lincoln; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Izetta (Jones) Wilkens; and sister Marilyn Owen.


A memorial has been established to the DeWitt United Methodist Church, DeWitt Historical Society, and the Farmhouse Fraternity with Galen and Marna Conn in charge.


Inurnment of ashes will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date.


There will be no viewing, but a register book will be available for signatures from 3-7:00 Thursday at the Venrick-Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in DeWitt.


Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 11, 2011 at the DeWitt United Methodist Church with Reverend Karl Lent officiating. A family prayer service will be held at 10:45 A.M. Friday at the church.
