Sgt.Harry F. McFall,Jr., USMCR, of the Bronx, NY, was strafed by enemy fire and died while protecting his men from snipers on Iwo Jima Feb. 25, 1945. He was was a member of the 24th Marines, 4th Division. He was a Scout and Sniper and he was checking enemy caves for snipers when killed in action. He was buried in the 4th Division Cemetery on Iwo Jima; his body was returned to New York in 1948 at the request of his mother, Kathryn E. McFall of S.Bronx, NY. His remains were buried in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY in 1948; a flat stone was ordered and placed on his grave, according to records found on Ancestry.com. My mother was a penpal of his during the WWII; in his letters he always said he wanted to see action. He was a drill Sargent on Parris Island in the beginning of the war, then finally saw action where he lost his ilfe. My mother finally read an article in Leatherneck magazine some years ago; this is how she found out why he had stopped writing to her.
