Abby Schoonmaker Jackson, 1-13-1927
The funeral of Mrs. Abby Schoonmaker Jackson was held in the Methodist church on Tuesday afternoon.
Abby had returned to New Paltz after a few weeks in the Benedictine Hospital, then had a relapse and returned to the Hospital, where her death occurred on Friday last week. Abby's personality was so remarkable that we used to wonder whether she was not descended from a line of chiefs of her own race. Strong, cheerful, sympathetic, and an expert worker in time of sickness in the family she kept up the morale by drollery characteristics of the Negro. From an Indian grandfather she inherited senses of startling keeness and she had wonderful intuition and marked intelligence. From her mother she had a fund of Indian and Negro lore that was a contribution to the folk lore of the two races.
Mr. Halmshaw in conducting the funeral service classed Abby with the workers, saying that Christ was a worker, and through her work Abby left an example to be followed.
While Mrs. Kevan was singing the beautiful hymn, "Will there be any stars in my crown?" it came to us that Abby was freed from human weaknesses and that her crown was shining. ~ New Paltz Independent & Times.
