Raul Seva, 90, was the first child of Maria Teresa (1900-1985) and George Seva (1875-?). He and his older sister Georgina (1917-1994) and older brother Armand (1918-2002) were all born in Cuba. The family visited the US in 1923 and then his physician father and siblings immigrated in 1928. His parents had divorced in Cuba. His mother was admitted for permanent residence in 1966. Raul lived with his father in New York, and later in life he lived in Florida, where his mother ended up. He was predeceased by parents, his sister in 1994 and his brother in 2002.

After high school, he worked as a bell-boy on the Yucatan American ship traveling between Vera Cruz, Mexico and New York in 1937. In 1941 he enlisted in the Army at Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York. He became a member of the 101st Division Company H 3rd Battallion 501 Parachute Infantry, known famously as the Screaming Eagles Airborne Division. On September 17, 1944 he jumped into Holland behind enemy lines during Operation Market-Garden. There he sustained a leg injury in Schindle for which he was sent to a hospital in England for six weeks where fellow soldiers "Johnny Pozluzny, Rosworm and Christian" were also being treated.

He went on to survive the heroic Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne for which his unit and he earned the Presidential Unit Citation.

Raul is remembered by another injured soldier in his unit to whom he wrote a long letter as "a good looking guy. He was so handsome had no trouble picking up girls. Just company - took them to the movies" in England where they were stationed while awaiting deployment.
