Mary Stewart Dennis

Lafayette - A Memorial Service will be held Friday, November 30, 2012 at 10 a.m. at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette for Mary Stewart Dennis, 99, who died on Monday, November 26, 2012 at Our Lady of the Oaks Retirement Manor in Lafayette.

Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park in Baton Rouge with Mrs. Dennis' deceased husband Howell A. (Hob) Dennis.

Reverend Dr. Steve Horn, Pastor of First Baptist Church, Lafayette, Louisiana will officiate the service.

Mary Stewart was born Saturday, May 10, 1913 in York County, Pennsylvania and moved to Louisiana after visiting her sister Sally who was married and living in Shreveport. Sally's husband had a best friend named Howell (Hob) Dennis who worked in the oil & gas business. The two fell in love and soon got married. The couple had two children, Howell A. Dennis, Jr. and Macy Stewart Dennis. In 1947, Howell Sr. was killed in a car accident and Mary was left to raise their sons. Despite being strongly urged by family to move back to Pennsylvania, Mary decided to stay in the house that she and her husband built on Wilson St. in Lafayette because of its proximity to Southwest Louisiana Institute (now University of Louisiana-Lafayette). It was extremely important for her boys to get an education. It was there that she spent the next 65 years raising her boys, watching them grow into men and enjoying seeing them raise their own families. She always said that her grandchildren Howell III, David, Barbara, Mary Margaret and Ann Kathryn were the 'joy of her life' and she took great pleasure in spoiling them.

Mary also developed a love for gardening and soon discovered camellias with which she developed a love affair. She became very accomplished at grafting and air layering camellias and taught the members of the Lafayette Camellia Society, of which she was a member, how to do this. One of her proudest accomplishments was the development of a new variety of camellia, named the Mary Stewart Dennis, which is registered with the American Camellia Society. Mary is also a member of P.E.O., the National Society of Colonial Dames and Daughters of the American Revolution.

Mary is survived by her two sons Howell A. Dennis, Jr. and Macy Stewart Dennis and his wife Linda Wilhelm Dennis; two grandsons, Howell A. Dennis III of Crowley and David S.L. Dennis of Lafayette; three granddaughters, Barbara Dennis Outland and her husband Rob of Rich Square, N.C., Anne Dennis Mouton and her husband Stephan of Midland, Texas, and Mary Dennis Miller of Lafayette; and five great grandchildren, Robby Outland, Mary Outland, Claire Miller, Parker Mouton, Andrew Mouton and Emma Mouton.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Howell A. Dennis, Sr.; her parents, John Calvin Stewart and Rose Amos Stewart; two brothers, John Calvert Stewart and James Amos Stewart; four sisters, Sally Stewart Peyton, Margaret 'Peg' Stewart McClung, Rebecca Stewart Trout and Helen Stewart Murphy; and a daughter-in-law, Kathryn Stokes Dennis.

Visitation will be observed at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home from 8 a.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mary's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
