The sudden death of Cornelius Huffman at his home Monday morning was received with great sorrow throughout the village as he was a citizen universally esteemed and respected by everyone. Mr. Huffman was in his usual good health until a few minutes before his death. He was up at his usual hour and was about the house attending to his various small duties when he complained of a pain in his chest. He lay down upon a bed and, upon a request from his daughter to send for a physician, protested saying he would be all right in a few moments. The family in the adjoining room thought nothing of his illness and went about their work. Ten minutes later Mrs. Ketchum stepped into the bedroom to look at her father and was shocked to find life expired. He had simply fallen into a peaceful sleep and passed to that __own world.
Cornelius Huffman was born in Allegany county, New York March 30, 1828 and with his father's family he came to Illinois and settled near the then village of Indiantown, Marshall county in April 1846. When you note this date think for a moment what this eighteen-year-old witnessed in this then new country without railroads or means of transportation; without telegraph or papers, dreary wastes of prairie unsettled, flouring mills few and far between. A vast sleeping giant creature asleep awaiting the guidance of intelligence and the application of unapplied forces. The family remained at the old Indian site for a couple of years, then moved to Henry where the father bought and settled upon the farm which in after years was known as the Daniel Blood farm.
It was in Henry Sept. 17, 1856 that Mr. Huffman was united in marriage with Miss Sarah A. Conover who was born Nov. 17, 1830 in Hunterdon county, New Jersey, her family coming to Illinois and settling at Henry in 1852. In 1862 Mr. and Mrs. Huffman bought their homestead west of Henry on which they resided until moving to Bradford in the fall of 1899. Ten children were born to the, five of them, four daughters and one son, now living. They are Mrs. John Nickolls, Wada Petra, Ill., Mrs. Fred Barton, Amoret, Mo., David Huffman, Fremont, Nebr., Mrs. May Ketchum at home, and Mrs. William Short, Fort Worth, Texas.
Mr. Huffman, or the "Squire" as all know him best for his service of more than twenty-five years in the public capacity, was also school trustee of Saratoga township for twenty-three years, giving complete dedication in whatever task of public duty undertaken.
