During the Civil War, Edward fought for the Confederacy, in three different regiments. He was in the battle of Manassas as a member of the famous Stonewell Brigrade Co. F, 10th Virginia Infantry. Enlisting April 18, 1861 at Woodstock as a sergeant, he was wounded in the thigh in action August 9, 1862 at Cedar Mountain. Sent to Charlottesville hospital August 12, 1862; Transferred to Co. E, 12th Virginia Calvary,the Laurel Brigade, reenlisted April 2, 1863 at New Market as a scout, rank of private.
Following the war, Mark married Elizabeth Burner November 14, 1866 in Shenandoah County, Virginia and they had eight children.
