Emra C. "Duke" Lathrop, age 87, passed away peacefully with his wife at his side on Nov. 2, 2012, from lymphoma.

He was born in Wallowa, the ninth of 13 children of Louis and Hazel (West) Lathrop.

He was raised in the Leap area, north of Lostine, and graduated from Enterprise High School in 1943. He married Leah Rhee Caudle on Nov. 6, 1950, in Lewiston, Idaho.

They adopted Becci and Burke, biological siblings, when they were babies and also helped raise dozens of foster children.

Duke, with brother Shorty (Harold), sold their Lord Flat and Snake River property, then moved to Jim Town Road outside Lostine in 1950, when he and Rhee married.

They lived on various places prior to establishing The Rocking Eleven Ranch, just north of Lostine in 1963. They began ranching with just a few head of cattle as they worked other jobs to make a living. Duke worked for the both USFS and Wayne Cook during these early years. Duke and Rhee grew the ranch from humble beginnings. In 2008, they moved to their new home on Lostine River Road, just inside the city limits. When Duke entered into semi-retirement at this time, he took more time to relax. Duke and Rhee began traveling in the winters in the 1980s.

Duke was known as the "Silver Fox" due to his beautiful white head of hair.

Duke belonged to many organizations during his life, including the Soil & Water Conservation District Board, Wallowa County Stockgrowers' Association (he served as president and was winner of Grassman of the Year and Cattleman of the Year awards), Oregon Cattlemen's Association (he was 2nd vice president), West Side Ditch Company, South Fork Grange (past Master), and Lostine Presbyterian Church (trustee and on the endowment committee).

He had also been a member of Enterprise High School boxing team, Lostine School Board, Wallowa County ESD, Wrangler Riding Group, Future Farmers of America (honorary member) and Enterprise Elks Lodge.

Duke and Rhee were most recently the 2012 Hells Canyon Mule Days Honorary Grand Marshals.

Duke loved to dance, play cards with "the boys" at the Ranch Rider, have morning coffee with the crew at Lostine Tavern and play Santa at Grange and church. While Becci and Burke were in 4-H, he chaperoned several mountain trips with the whole club. He loved being with his family, including his very first great-grandchild. His biggest accomplishments in life were the ranch and his family.

Duke is survived by his wife of almost 62 years, Rhee Lathrop; son and daughter-in-law Burke Lee and Tammy Lathrop of Lostine; daughter Becci Rhee Lathrop-Sasser of Enterprise; two granddaughters; a great-grandson; three sisters, Sally Akins of Lostine, Mary Lou Huffman of Hermiston, Marion Bowen of La Grande; two brothers, Wayne Lathrop of Enterprise and Melvin Lathrop of Wallowa; and a multitude of nieces, nephews and life-time friends. He was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers.
