William H.Garis 1838-1899

William H. Garis was born in 1838 to Philip and Julia Garis from Boyertown, and brother of Thomas and Philip.Garis.

On the 1880 Palo Alto census , William was reported as 42 years old, a laborer, with wife Elizabeth and children Anna L.,age ten, Ida age eight ,Clara I age six, George W. age four, and on the 1890 directory he also had children William age eight and Howard age 5, now listed as a engineer living at 140 West Bacon Street in Palo Alto.

Civil War
He joined the 6th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment as a private, he also responded in September 1862 and joined the 17th Pennsylvania Militia Company E, led by Captain Robert Allison, to protect his state during Lee's invasion of Maryland. Then during the rebel invasion of Pennsylvania in late June 1863, he joined the 39th Pennsylvania Militia Company A, but saw no action while the three-day battle at Gettysburg. He received a pension in 1892, his widow was granted a pension following his death on March 14, 1899. His obituary describes him as "One of Palo Alto's oldest and highly respected citizens." , and who passed after a brief illness. He and his wife Elizabeth who died in 1913 are buried in the Port Carbon Presbyterian Church Cemetery .
