William Burton was born in 1866, at Greenwood, N. Y. His father was a blacksmith, and at the age of fifteen years he began to assist his father in the shop, and learned the trade, which he has since worked at in Whitesville, N. Y., 2 years; Oswayo. Pa., 1 year; Harmontown, Pa., 1½ years; Orangefieid, N. Y., 6 years; Rushford, N. Y., 1 year. He spent over a year as conductor on the Buffalo street cars.

Mr. Burton came to Franklinville in 1905 and for several years ran the canning factory blacksmith shop. In 1911 be rented the Cooley & McGill shop below the depot, which he has since conducted. He was band instructor at the five places mentioned above, also at Elton, Machias and Ellisburg. He organized and is manager of The Burton Orchestra, which plays at dances and other entertainments.

He is a member of the local Woodmen and Odd Fellows. In 1889 he married Miss Anna Stephens of Greenwood, N.Y., and they have two children, Miss Lydia and Milford.
