Col. Augustus Weyman Houston Jr. (1883-1949), long prominent in civic and fraternal circles of the city, passed away suddenly Monday afternoon at the family home as the result of a heart attack.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from his late residence on North Fourth Street, with Rev. W. Pipes Jones, of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, officiating. A delegation from the Palatka Lodge of Elks served as active pallbeares, while members of Palatka Lodge No. 34, F&AM, were honorary pallbearers. The impressive Masonic service was conducted at the graveside in Oak Hill East Cemetery, W. Carl Davis and son directed the arrangements.
The deceased was born onn May 13, 1883, in San Antonio, Texas. After attending the schools of his native city, he graduated from the University of Virginia. In 1919 he came to Florida as vice-president and general manager of the Southern Utilities Company, which later was taken over by the present Florida Power and Light Copmpany. Save for about three years spent in New York City, he had been a well known citizen for nearly thirty years. During his long residence here he was active in various spheres. He was a member and officer of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Palatka Masonic Lodge, Palatka Shrine Club, Palatka Elks Lodge, and was a charter member and past president of the Palatka Rotary Club. He held a life membership in the Sons of the American Revolution of Philadelphia, and was a member of Oriental Lodge No. 7, F&AM, of Denver, Colo., Ben Hur Temple, Austin, Texas, and the San Antonio, Texas, Consistory F&AM. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Wilma Mateer Houston of Palatka; one daughter, Mrs. Eleanor Houston Hudgins of Jacksonville; a son, Augustus Weyman Houston, III., of Baltimore; two grandchildren, Weymen Franklin Houston and Elizabeth Hudson Hudgins of Jacksonville, and a sister, Miss Elizabeth Houston, of San Antonio, Texas.
