James S. Williams Sr., 67, a former Edwardsville resident, died at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Mercy Hospital, Brownsville, Tex. He had been ill several years.
Mr. Williams was born in Turner, Ind. on Jan. 27, 1904, a son of the late John D. and Carrie Lucas Williams.
He lived in Edwardsville from 1947 to 1960, then in Collinsville for about 10 years before moving to Brownsville, Tex.
He was an operating engineer and retired in 1969.
Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, the former Bessie M. Tibbetts, a son, James S. Williams Jr. of Edwardsville, a daughter, Mrs. Daniel A. (Joann) Hicks of Fairview Heights, and three grandchildren.
Also surviving are sisters, Mrs. Warren (Laura) James, Brazil, Ind., and Elizabeth Williams, Terre Haute, Ind., and brothers, John D. Williams, East Chicago, Ind., Fred G. Williams, Brazil, Ind., and Dudley Williams, Taylorville.
He was a member of Edwardsville Lodge 99, AF&AM, the Royal Arch Masons and the Mirza Shrine, both of Pittsburg, Kan., the Edwardsville Eastern Star and the Mississippi Valley Consistory of Scottish Rite bodies.
He also belonged to the Lion's Club of Brownsville, Tex., First Christian Church of Brazil, Ind., and Operating Engineers Local 520 of East St. Louis.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home, Rev. Charles Minton of the First Christian Church, Caseyville, officiating.
Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
