John Smith with his wife Nancy were living in Greenville Dist., SC in 1820c. Nancy's father, Lewis Rector, is listed next to them at that time. John Smith was still living in Greenville Dist. in 1830, though by 1840 they had moved over into neighbouring Pickens Dist. were they remained until their deaths. They resided in Easley Township in 1870, and Nancy was still living there with her son William L. Smith in 1880.c A notice of her death was published in the Thursday, April 20, 1882 issue of The Pickens Sentinel: "Mrs. Nancy Smith an aged lady died at the residence of her son William L. Smith near Dacusville on Saturday the 9th instant."

From census records, it has been verified that John and Nancy Smith were the parents of 13 children. By 1850, only the youngest six children were residing at home, though William L. and Joel R. were living next door. Samuel D. Smith was also residing in Pickens Dist., SC in 1850, as were Edley and Elizabeth (Smith) Jones.
