JOHN ANTHONY, PIONEER MACHINIST, DIES AT 99
John Anthony, well known as a machinist here for more than 50 years, died this morning at 5 o'clock at his home on Rt. 6, Burlington.
He had been in failing health for a number of years, and critically ill for two months.
A native and lifelong resident of Alamance County, Mr. Anthony was the youngest son of the late William Anthony and Eliza Jane Rich Anthony. He made his home on the old Anthony homestead where he was born.
He had been a member of Graham Friends Church for the past 65 years. His wife, Mrs. Frances Newlin Anthony, died in December 1958.
Mr. Anthony began his career as a machinist in 1912, when he opened a shop in his home. The original shop was destroyed by fire in 1951 and was rebuilt. He operated his shop on a full-time basis until he was more than 80 years old, and in later years continued to spend several hours there each day until his retirement some years ago.
While in his teens he became a blacksmith, and after operating a blacksmith shop here for a number of years he spent several years he spent several years doing repair in manufacturing plants in Fayetteville, Greensboro, Durham and Graham.
He did repair work at Oneida Mills in Graham for nine years before opening his own shop.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Flora A. Mansfield of the home, Mr. Lizzie A. Greeson of Rt. 2, Graham and Mrs. Frances A. Whitesell of Rt. 6, Greensboro; five sons, Layton E. Anthony of Burlington, Thomas A. Anthony of Durham, John W. Anthony and James K. Anthony of Rt. 6, Burlington, and Isaac N Anthony of Detroit, Mich.; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Final rites will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Graham Friends Church by the Rev. W. Blake Wright, pastor, and the Rev. John M. Permar, a former pastor. Burial will follow in Linwood Cemetery in Graham.
The body will remain at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the mortuary tomorrow night from 7 to 9 o'clock.
Pallbearers, all grandsons, will be Ladd Anthony, Blake Anthony, Marshall Anthony, Taylor Anthoy, Wayne Greeson and Ed Greeson. "
