SAYREVILLE - The Rev.Thomas J. O'Dea, founder and pastor of St. Bernadette's R.C. Church, died after a long illness yesterday at St. Joseph's Hospital, Stamford, Conn., where he had been a patient for the past two weeks.
Rev. O'Dea came to St. Bernadette's Church, which he founded in February 1957, from his his first position as pastor of St. Jude's R.C. Church, Blairstown.
Born in Brooklyn, he studied under Dominican Sisters and Christian Brothers in Brooklyn parochial schools.
He attended Mount St. Mary's Seminary, Emmetsburg, Md., and was ordained in 1951 by the Bishop William A. Griffin in Trenton.
Rev. O'Dea served at St. Anthony's R.C. Church, Trenton; Sacred Heart R.C. Church, Riverton; SS. Philip and James Church, Phillipsburg; St.Peter's Church, New Brunswick; St. Rose Church, Belmar and St. Joseph's Church, North Plainfield.
He was an Army chaplain during World War 2, serving as a captain in Europe, under the command of Gen. Dwight Eisenhower.
Surviving is a brother, Frank M. of Trumbull, Conn.
A Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10a.m. at St. Bernadette's Church.
Burial will be in the Cemetery of the Holy Cross, Brooklyn.
He will lie in state at the church today 7 to 10 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Arrangements are by the Gundrum Service-Home for Funerals, 237 Bordentown Ave., South Amboy.
