Lloyd (Tookie) drowned in Day Lake north of Kimball on June 19, 1953. He was fishing with two of his friends, brother-in-law Donald Brown, and Melvin (Scout) Blair. Scout was the only one who could not swim. He fell out of the duck boat and Don and Tookie told him to hold on to the boat and they would take him to shore. The story goes per a witness, Fred Thiede. Scout tried to get back into the boat, tipping the boat and causing Don and Tookie to fall into the water. By some freak accident, Scout was the only survivor. At that time, Tookie's wife, Mary Lou, was pregnant with Debbie who was their first child. Mary Lou lost both her husband and brother in this tragic accident.
