TAMMS - J. Reid Abercrombie, 85, died at 3:29 a.m. Sunday, Feb.17, 2008 in St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born May 16, 1922, in Alexander County to Cyrille and Adeline Jane (Kendall) Abercrombie. He married Mildred Dean Brock on June 16, 1941. She preceded him in death Sept. 14, 2001.

He was a director and one of the original organizers of the Tamms State Bank (now Capaha Bank). He was the owner and operator of Abercrombie Abstract Company in Cairo. He retired from GM and O Railroad, where he had worked as a yard clerk. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force during World War II as a tail gunner in Europe. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a 32nd Degree Mason, Caledonia Lodge.

He is survived by one son, John R. Abercrombie, Jr. of Cape Girardeau; one grandson; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and one brother, Cyrille H. Abercrombie, Jr.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb 21, 2008, in Crain Funeral Home in Tamms, with the Rev. Larry Buckles officiating. Interment will be in Jonesboro Cemetery.
