He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1975 after 38 years of service. He was a member of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, Newport News. Mr. Stephens was a member of James River Country Club, an avid golfer, and in 1966 and 1967 was the only one to represent Virginia in the National Seniors Golf Tournament.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ruby D. Stephens; one daughter, Patricia S. Queen of Yorktown; one son, Sam L. Stephens Jr. of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Pearle Jacobson; one brother, Keith Stephens; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
