Biographical Sketch
Colonel Seth Morse Barber was born September 5, 1820 in Groton Horace, Tompkins County, New York. He was the eldest of the six children of Reverend Phineas B. Barber and his first wife, Orpha Morse Barber. Barber came with his father, a Methodist minister, to Berlin, Erie County, Ohio in 1830. Barber graduated from the University of Michigan in 1852. He taught at the Norwalk Seminary and from 1852 to 1861, he served as superintendent of Ashland, Ohio public schools.

On June 3, 1853, Colonel Barber married Amanda Gardner, second of the eight children of Charles Gardner of Peru Twp., Huron County, Ohio. Amanda had graduated in 1851 from the Literary Departmet of Oberlin College. In 1861, Barber raised Company H of the 42nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Captain Barber's company was made up largely of his Ashland, Ohio students. He led Company H in the battles of Middle Creek, Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Thompson's Hill, Raymond, Champion's Hill, Big Black River, and the first assault on Vicksburg. During the second assault, Barber was shot through the right leg, making amputation necessary. He was commissioned major for gallant and meritorious service at the Siege of Vicksburg. He was later promoted to lieutenant colonel by brevet. He was transferred to the 15th Veteran Reserve Corps and served in the provost marshal's office at Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio until he was discharged July 20, 1866.

After his discharge, Barber returned to his position at Ashland Public Schools. He was appointed a United States pension agent and served in Cleveland, Ohio from 1870 to 1877.
