Nathan F. Weed was born in this town February 1, 1835, and made Franklinville his home during his entire life. He began clerking in the J. R. Salisbury & Co., store in 1857, and continued during the change of the firm to Salisbury & Lyon, and later to D. E. Lyon. In 1857 Mr. Weed, with the assistance of his father William F. Weed, purchased the business of Mr. Lyon, and conducted it under the firm name of N. F. Weed & Co., for half a century. The store is the one now occupied by William Horton, grocer, on West Park Square. Mr. Weed and his father established an exchange office in their store soon after they started in business, and it was the local banking institution until it was merged into the Bank of Franklinville in 1872, which later became the First National Bank, and Mr. Weed became one of the directors. He assisted in starting several banks in other towns, and also the Farmers National Bank of Franklinville, of which he was vice president and director. He also was interested in establishing the canning factory and casket factory in this village. He served as supervisor of the town several years, and also was both village president and trustee. He was an elder in the First Presbyterian church, and a member of the committee in charge of building the present church. His death occurred May 11, 1908. His widow; daughter, Mrs. Blanche Smith, the Franklinville postmistress; sons, William and Frank survive him.
