Marine Pfc. Richard M. Lombardo 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Myron F. Lombardo, 1659 Stillwagon Rd. SE, is the 12th Trumbull County serviceman to lose his life in the fighting in Vietnam.

The parents were notified today by Marine Corps aides in Youngstown that the Howland Township Marine died from chest wounds suffered in a battle in Quang Kin Province June 2.

No other details were immediately revealed except the Marine received the wounds during a barrage of rifle fire.

The notification of the death was relayed to Youngstown from Marine headquarters in Washington.

Pfc. Lombardo had been in Vietnam less than two weeks in the times of his death.

A 1966 graduate of Howland High School, he entered the Marine Corps in October and received his basic training at Parris Island S. C. He also underwent training at Camp Lajeune, N.C. and Camp Pendleton, Calif., before assignment overseas May 22.

A well-known and well-liked student at Howland, he was a member of the Tiger football team and last May won first place in a national woodworking competition with a gun cabinet he had made in the high school shop.

Pfc. Lombardo was the oldest of five children.

Service arrangements await the arrival of the body from Vietnam.
