Mustered into Company A, 51st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on September 12, 1861, he was promoted to 2d Lieutenant on May 3, 1864, and to to 1st Lieutenant on October 1, 1864. When previous Company A commander Joseph K. Bolton was promoted to Major in Juanuary 1865, John Coulston was advanced to Captain and company commander to fill the vacancy on January 15, 1865. He served through the end of the conflict, and was honorably mustered out with his men on July 27, 1865.
