On January 1, 1927, in McSherrystown, Adams County, Pennsylvania, she married John Samuel Bowman, son of Charles William and Agnes Menges Bowman. They were the parents of 3 children: Esther Mae, Terry Samuel and Donald Eugene Bowman. Nellie passed away on April 13, 1991, in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and was buried on the 16th in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania.

"Nellie M. Bowman, 85, of 1075 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg, died Saturday evening, April 13, at Gettysburg Lutheran Village. She formerly lived at Oxford Road in Hanover. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, John Samuel Bowman on March 19, 1982. Born in Rocky Ridge, Carroll (sic--should read Frederick) County, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Bertha Hyser Valentine. Nellie was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in McSherrystown. She also was a member of the National AARP. She had been employed at Sterner Grocery at both the Carlisle Street and York Street locations. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Esther) Swope, 280 Winding Lane, East Berlin. two sons, Terry S. Bowman, 28 Brewster Street, Hanover and Donald E. Bowman, Sr., 54 Evergreen Drive, Hanover; two sisters, Mrs. Nadine Orndorff, 135 Allegany Avenue, Hanover, Mrs. Richard (Betty) Bevenour of Spring Grove; a brother, Charles Valentine of Jacksonville, Florida; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Main Street, McSherrystown, with her pastor, the Rev. Peter W. F. Nodyne officiating. Interment will be in the Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday evening at Wetzel Funeral Home, 549 Carlisle Street, Hanover, and Wednesday after 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in McSherrystown.
